Care and Maintenance

Good furniture made from natural materials has good technical qualities and is aesthetically attractive. Furniture lasts longer and gives greater satisfaction if maintained well and treated with reasonable care.
Cleaning and maintaining your wood furniture correctly will depend on the final finish given to the wood.

Lacquered furniture:

Clean daily with a dry, soft flufless cloth, always along the grain, as any scratches caused by dust are then less noticeable. Stains or rings not removed by this should be treated as follows:

Periodic cleaning:
Periodic cleaning with a slightly damp cloth will remove dirt and dust. Rub stained areas lightly with no. 600 (very fine grain) sand paper. Wipe off with a soft dry cloth. Re-coat evenly with a mix of one part clear lacquer and one part thinner.  Let dry for 4-5 hours then wipe with a soft dry cloth.

Oil-treated furniture:

Clean daily with a dry, soft flufless cloth. Spots and rings not removed by this should be treated as follows:

Periodic cleaning:
Wipe the furniture with a clean dry cloth. Prepare a mix of one part “double boiled linseed oil” (available at any paint & hardware stores) with two parts turpentine in a clean container. Dip a soft rag into the mixture, squeeze out thoroughly and apply sparingly all over the wooden surface, along the grain. Let the wood dry for 4-6 hours, and then wipe off excess with a soft, clean dry cloth thoroughly as it can stain paper or cloth that might come in contact with it. Such applications may be repeated once in three months or when required.

Caution:
If new oil treated furniture is being used for storing delicate fabrics or paper it is advisable to line the inside of drawers or shelves with disposable paper towel for the first few weeks to ensure that there is not accidental staining due to any residue of oil.

Leather components in furniture:

To maintain your leather furniture, daily wipe the leather clean with a yellow duster (polishing cloth available at the car service stations) with slight pressure. For any stains of tea/coffee/food/water simply wipe clean with a dry cloth first. Then take a little neutral shoe polish and rub it on the surface.
Leather being a natural product will tend to stretch and sag slightly after prolonged use. The texture (grains) may flatten slightly. This does not mean that there is anything wrong with the product. In fact, the more you use the leather the more supple and soft it gets.

Periodic cleaning:
Polish your leather with neutral (shoe) polish once a month. Leather should never be soaked in water.

Fabric Covers:

To maintain the removable covers of the sofa, get them dry-cleaned at regular intervals.
